My parents took Siena to pick out two chicks for their home. They plan on raising them as laying hens, and Siena was so excited to show them to Buddha! I was initially very nervous so I put Buddha in his crate and pulled the new chicks in their travel box next to him to check his reaction. He acted interested and calm so after a few moments, I told Buddha, "Gentle" and "Off" (I use the "off command to let him know he's not allowed to have it, similar to a "leave it" command) and opened up his crate door.
I didn't see any over excitement or prey drive so I let him sniff the chicks while they were safely snuggled in my hands. We went step by step and he seemed very calm so I let this video happen. What a good dog! I'm not sure if Buddha was listening to my quiet, calm requests or if he really didn't want to eat the cute little chicks - but he did amazing. I'm so proud of him!
Of course, Siena is a sweet doll and was as gentle as ever as she always is with animals. I was a lot less worried about how she would treat the chicks.
We also had a sudden lighting/thunderstorm this morning and I took a cute video of Siena comforting Buddha. New post on that coming up later this week!
